There are two types of African Elephant that you will see on Safari Trips in Africa, the Savannah Elephant and the Forest Elephant, the Savannah is a lighter grey and stands up to a meter taller.

Both males and females have tusks (unlike their Indian cousins) as well as enormous ears and two 'fingers' on their trunks.

Elephants are vegetarians and due to their huge size need to eat a lot - around 225kg a day! Which means that when you spot them on your Safari, they will most likely be munching away on their favourite greens!!

Social Life of Elephants

Elephants can live to be around 60 or 70 years old. Elephant Herds are made up of females, the males leave when they are in their teens.

The African Elephant once roamed the entire continent, however this once abundant giant is now found only in scattered groups south of the Sahara, in 1989 they were added to the international list of the most endangered species.
